Paandiruppu Thiraupathi Amman Kovil
The temple is the city's main identity, as it has a very ancient story back in history. Drawpathi amman is a goddess from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, namely Drawpathi, primarily worshipped by Hindus. Drawpathi was the wife of the five Pandava brothers in the Mahabharata epic. She is greatly believed to be the incarnation of Hindu goddess Mariamman. This kovil also a place where Drawpathi amman is being worshipped.
There is a very ancient 'Mahabharata Eadu', a kind of bounded book which is written on dried leaves, is there which is brought to this temple by Dadan, the Mahamuni from India during 15th century. During that period, Batticaloa was ruled by the king 'Ethirmanasingan'. During the king's ruling Dadan the Mahamuni built a small temple and started worshiping the goddess for the first time. The king, who ruled Kandy, King Vimaladarma Sooriyan also had visited the temple during BC 1594 – 1604 period.
As the temple has a very ancient history, it is a very famous temple in Srilanka's eastern province. There is a granite walkway located in the middle of the oasis. There are the statues of "Pancha Paandavas". There is a ritual, known as fire-walking is very famous in that temple. It usually happens during the annual festival of the temple. The devotees of the temple believe very strongly that the goddess is mighty and is seeking fulfillment of marriage, getting married to a person of a girl's choice and healthy and longevity of husband. These are the central prayers of this temple. The temple atmosphere is also very calm and peaceful and a better place to do meditation. It is the right place for tourists to visit and for pilgrims as well.
