Fredrick fort is situated in the Northern part of Trincomalee. The Portuguese built it in 1623. The Dutch captured fort Fredrick in 1639, and the fort was renovated. The koneswaram temple is one of the historic temples located inside this fort.
Fort was captured by British in 1782 and was rebuilt in 1795. They ruled the area until Sri Lanka gained freedom from the British colonial regime. In 1948 the fort was released.

Many countries tried to capture Trincomalee because of its natural harbor. This is one of the most famous natural harbors in Asia. While traveling to the backside of Koneshwara hill, one can notice the ancient remains buried in the mountains.
In the historical books, it is said that the Portuguese had demolished the Koneshwaram kovil and used the bricks and rubbles to build the fort. Nowadays the fort premises are under army control. Fort Frederick is an alluring tourist destination depicting the monuments of Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial rulings.

Inside the fort and surroundings, one can visit the Gokana temple and the Wellesley lodge, among other historical imprints left by the colonial era. Fort Frederick is a landmark that offers an unpatrolled experience taking you on a journey back in time.
