Gal Viharaya
Gal Viharaya in Sri Lanka is definitely in the ultimate Asian bucket list for those interested in ancient archeology. Galviharaya is located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. This monument was built by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. The four Buddha statues of Gal Viharaya can be rated as the most beautiful stone statues in Sri Lanka. The place was originally called “Uttararama'' (Northern Monastery). All Gal Viharaya statues are finely carved onto a single rock face, which creates a breathtaking effect. The attention to detail by the stonemason shows unsurpassed skill. The human form carved out is made realistic by a robe that flows naturally, head pressing down on a pillow, under robe following the outer robe seam and universal emotion. Galviharaya has four statues those are Samadhi Statue (Meditating Buddha Statue), The Vijjudhara Guha Cave Statue (Meditating Buddha Statue),The Maha Karuna Statue (The Standing Statue), Parinirvana Statue (Passing Away Statue).
