Irakkandy lagoon
Irakkandi Bridge is known to be the third longest bridge in Sri Lanka, that covers a length of 300M and 7M width with two lanes. It spans the Irakkandi Lagoon linking Trincomalee with Pulmoddai. This new bridge that exists now, was constructed as a replacement of the old bridge that was destroyed by the Tsunami disaster. Before the construction of this bridge in 2009, civilians traveled through ferries and boats to cross this lagoon.
This bridge project targeted to spur economic growth in Sri Lanka while assisting local communities in the Eastern Province to restart their economic activities and recover from the devastating Tsunami and the three decade of armed conflict. This bridge is not only joining two edges it is also joining people from other districts too. The irakkandy lagoon, runs under this bridge is of ecological and economic value.
