Senanayaka Samudra
This is known to be the largest man-made reservoir in Srilanka situated in Gal Oya National Park in Ampara district. This reservoir was constructed under the Gal Oya multipurpose project which began in 1949 and completed in 1953. Said to be the largest tank in Sri Lanka. It is called Samudra = Sea, since the tank is so large that there are waves like in a sea.
This massive reservoir is at the foot of the Inginiyagala mountains. The mountain ranges far beyond the reservoir enhances the panoramic view that captures your attention. The road leading to the reservoir goes through the Galoya forest reserve in which the wild elephants frequently roam. This is an ideal place for relaxation that is known among travelers for boat trips and elephant sighting, as an add on, you can also see crocodiles and a very calm bird island. Senanayake Samudra reservoir is an important fishery and a valuable source of water for irrigation.
