William Ault hall and Methodist church
Rev. William Ault is a missionary worker who travels to Sri Lanka in 1813 with the mission of spreading Methodism. He built the first Methodist church in the eastern part of Sri Lanka. It is called “William Ault Methodist Church”. This church has many historical values and importance while considering the history of missionaries in Sri Lanka.
Rev. Ault established eight schools, including the Methodist Central College. He is known as the morning star of Methodism in Eastern Sri Lanka. In 1897 the mission hall of Puliyanthivu Methodist church Batticaloa was named the William Ault Memorial Hall. There is a statue of him placed next to the Batticaloa Gate to honor his valuable services to Batticaloa.
